Get hooked
When you look up, you can see that most of the buildings in Amsterdam have these devices sticking out from under the roofs.
I was told that, due to the steep narrow staircases, hardly anything can be taken up the stairs. So, these hooks on ropes are used to lift furniture, which you then pull into your apartment through the window.
